More than 60 students from Careers in Sports High School participated in a robotics workshop, drone piloting exercise, and tech repair seminar at the Bronx Gigabit Center
Local youth engaged with Bronx tech professionals to learn more about careers in STEM
BRONX, NY – LinkNYC, the public-private partnership that created the largest free public Wi-Fi network in the world, today introduced Bronx high school students to real-world STEM career opportunities during the Youth Tech Career Expo, in partnership with the NYC Office of Technology & Innovation (OTI), Boldyn Networks, NYC FIRST, the Andrew Freedman Home, and local Bronx technologists. Hosted at the Bronx Gigabit Center, more than 60 students from Careers in Sports High School engaged in a day of hands-on educational tech activities, professional networking, and career exploration.
“Every young person in our city should have equitable access to the technical training and professional development needed to succeed in our growing tech industry,” said Nicole Robinson-Etienne, Senior Director of External Affairs for LinkNYC. “That’s why LinkNYC is committed to delivering impactful programming at our Gigabit Centers — empowering youth in the Bronx and beyond to explore emerging technologies, build specialized skills, and become future leaders in STEM fields.”
Students rotated through a series of interactive workshops, including drone navigation, robotics demonstrations, a tech repair training seminar, and a “Digital Careers Jeopardy” activity to learn more about pathways to becoming a professional in the tech industry. The event also included a panel discussion with local tech leaders, civil servants, and entrepreneurs who shared their advice for pursuing a successful career in STEM. Panelists included Bronx Tech Hub founder and CEO George Nunez; Ashonda Culcleasure, the Bronx-based founder of Fix It With Piggy; Garth Naar, CEO of Avatar Tech; Nadia Sa’d Mulaire, VP of Business Development & Transit Strategy at Boldyn Networks; and Bronx native David Reid, Community Engagement Manager for Franchise Admin & Broadband at the NYC Office of Technology & Innovation.
The Bronx Gigabit Center, located at the Andrew Freedman Home, is one of five technology-focused community hubs established through a partnership between LinkNYC, the NYC Office of Technology & Innovation, and Boldyn Networks to expand free public Wi-Fi access and digital literacy programming in underserved neighborhoods across the five boroughs.
